Which location suits you

Wangerooge has just one village. The ferry docks at the West landing stage, and from there the island railway takes 15 to 20 minutes to the station in the village. The journey is included in the ferry ticket.

  • In the village: Most hotels, guest houses and holiday apartments are here, close to the beach and the promenade.
  • In the west: Around the Westturm and its youth hostel it is quieter. The visitor's tax is lower there, but the island railway does not stop at the Westturm, and your luggage arrives only by home delivery.

How the ferry and island railway run from Harlesiel is covered on the Ferry to Wangerooge page.

Hotels and guest houses

The range runs from beach hotels and hotels garni to guest houses and rooms. One example is the Parkhotel on the village square, with 26 rooms and suites, a sauna and a fitness room. The Strandhotel Gerken stands right on the seafront promenade, has a sauna, steam bath and bike hire, and also lets holiday apartments.

Whether dogs are allowed is something to settle directly with the hotel.

Holiday apartments

You search for and book holiday apartments and holiday homes through the tourist board's (Verkehrsverein) accommodation search, either directly or by request. The booking service is free of commission for you, and you pay your host directly. Hosts with up to nine beds are in some cases rated with DTV stars. If you cannot find anything free, the tourist board's quick enquiry service can help.

If your host has no terms of their own, the rule is: arrival by 18:00 at the latest, later only by arrangement, and departure by 10:00. Each host sets their own minimum stay, bed linen and final cleaning.

Youth hostel in the Westturm

The youth hostel is in the Westturm, the island's landmark. It has 168 beds in 47 rooms, all with private bathrooms, from single rooms to family rooms, with full board. It takes individual travellers, families and groups. It is a 15 to 20-minute walk from the landing stage, and there is bike hire at the Westturm.

Camping on the mainland

Wangerooge is closed to private vehicles, so motorhomes and caravans stay on the mainland. In Harlesiel there is a campsite and there are motorhome pitches, including at the Mole and at the Cliner Quelle. Outside the main season you cannot reserve there. From the port of Harlesiel you travel to the island as a day visitor.

Visitor's tax

You pay a visitor's tax for every overnight stay. High season is from 15 March to 31 October and from 26 December to 6 January, and at other times a reduced rate applies. In the central part of the village you pay more than in the rest of the municipality, mainly the west. Arrival and departure day together count as one day.

You pay online before your trip, with your ferry ticket or at the ServiceCenter, and checks are made when you leave. The third and each further child up to 14 years is free with one parent. There is also an annual guest card.

Getting your luggage from the harbour to your accommodation

On board you may only take two small bags per person. Larger suitcases you hand in at Harlesiel for a fee; be at the harbour at least 30 minutes before departure. You get your luggage back at the island railway station.

For a surcharge, the luggage service delivers suitcases to your accommodation, and in the west of the island that is the only way. For your journey home, you book the collection one day ahead. There are no taxis on the island, but an island shuttle runs by reservation from the station and the airfield.

Without a car

Your car stays in Harlesiel. At the harbour you pay for each day or part of a day, and you do not need to reserve. More on this under Parking at the ferry port.

Bikes and handcarts (Bollerwagen) do not travel in the passenger area but as luggage, for a fee, and not always on the same day. It is easier to hire a bike on the island: several firms offer bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes and tandems. The seafront promenade and Zedeliusstraße are pedestrian zones.

With a dog

Many holiday apartments, hotels and guest houses accept dogs. In the accommodation search you filter for pets, and the paw rating shows which places are dog-friendly. Without an agreement with your host your dog may not come with you, so give its breed and size when you book.

On the ferry your dog pays the child fare. From 15 March to 31 October dogs must be kept on a lead, and all year round in the quiet and transition zones of the national park. There is no vet on the island.

When to book

In peak season, reserve your ferry and accommodation early. For July and August the island recommends renting the roofed wicker beach chair (Strandkorb) for your whole stay straight away. In winter accommodation can be booked, but some restaurants close for a winter break, and the Oase has shorter opening hours. Ferry services may be cancelled when there is ice. Departures shift with the tides, and the times for your day of travel are in the timetable.
