Which location suits you
Langeoog is car-free, and almost all accommodation is in the island village. It stretches from the island railway station on the southern edge of the village to the dunes at the main beach, the distances are short and even shorter by bike. The east of the island, with the Pirolatal, the Melkhörndüne and Ostende, is nature and hardly developed for staying.
- Around the Hauptstraße: The village centre, with shops, restaurants and the water tower. A good choice if you want to manage without a bike.
- Towards the beach and the spa centre: In the north-west of the village, a few minutes from the beach. Many hotels with wellness areas are here.
- Behind the dyke: Quieter streets, a little further from the beach, often better value.
- Near the island railway station: Short distances on arrival and departure, especially handy with a lot of luggage.
The harbour is about two kilometres south-east of the village, and the island railway takes you to the island railway station. For how the ferry from Bensersiel runs, see Ferry to Langeoog.
Hotels and guesthouses
The hotels are spread across the whole village. Several have a pool, sauna or a larger wellness area, and there are also smaller guesthouses and hotels garni (hotels serving breakfast only). Close to the beach on Langeoog usually means a few hundred metres through the dunes to the water.
Dogs are welcome at some hotels, for example the Strandhotel Achtert Diek on the Süderdünenring and the Hotel Kolb on the Barkhausenstraße. For other houses, it is best to ask directly.
Holiday apartments
Holiday apartments and guest rooms make up the largest part of the choice. Each host sets their own minimum stay, fixed arrival days, final cleaning and bed linen terms. Unless agreed otherwise, check-in is by 19:00 and check-out by 10:00.
As the ferry from Bensersiel is tide-dependent, you will not arrive at the same time every day. Agree your arrival with your host if your ferry docks late in the evening.
The island community warns of fake payment requests sent by messenger. Transfer money only to hosts you can positively identify.
Youth hostel and camping
The youth hostel at Domäne Melkhörn remains closed for the time being, as does the campsite that belongs to it, the only one on the island. Motorhomes are not allowed onto the car-free island.
If you want to camp, stay on the mainland: in Bensersiel there is a beach and family campsite right at the ferry port, though dogs are not allowed there. A motorhome pitch that allows dogs can be found in neighbouring Esens. From Bensersiel you reach Langeoog as a day guest.
Visitor's tax
A visitor's tax applies for every day on the island:
- From 16 years: full rate, higher in the main season (mid-March to early November) than in the low season
- Children from 6 to 15 years: reduced rate
The days of arrival and departure together count as one day. The tax may be shown separately on your accommodation invoice. The LangeoogCard is a ferry ticket and guest card in one.
Luggage from the harbour to your accommodation
On Langeoog you hardly carry your luggage yourself. In Bensersiel you load it into the luggage containers, at least ten minutes before departure. It travels by ship and island railway to the island railway station, where you collect it. For a surcharge it is taken on to your accommodation. If you order the LangeoogCard up to four weeks before you travel, luggage delivery to your door is already included.
You may take one piece of hand luggage per person on board. Hand carts and bicycles are charged at a separate rate. Classic bikes and pedelecs up to 25 km/h are allowed, faster e-bikes and e-scooters are not.
Without a car
Langeoog is car-free. Your car stays in the long-stay car parks at Bensersiel harbour. How that works is explained under Parking at the ferry port. On the island you get around on foot, by bike or with the luggage service.
With a dog
Dogs may travel on the ferry and the island railway, and on the ferry they need a ticket of their own. Dogs must be kept on a lead across the whole island. They may run off the lead on the two dog beaches West and East. Many places to stay welcome dogs, but always mention your dog when you enquire.
When to book
Most guests come from spring to autumn and stay just under a week on average. Book early for the summer holidays, Easter and Whitsun. In the low season from November the visitor's tax is lower and there is more choice. In winter fewer ships sail, and the departures are in the timetable.
