Which area suits you
Juist is about 17 kilometres long but narrow, and car-free. People stay in two places:
- In town: The main village, made up of Westdorf and Ostdorf, lies by the harbour. On the beach promenade you are right by the main swimming beach, and around the Kurplatz and Wilhelmstraße you will find shops, restaurants and the Haus des Kurgastes. From the harbour you walk to your accommodation.
- In the Loog: About 2 kilometres west of town. It has its own lifeguarded bathing area, the island museum and the youth hostel. It is quieter, but the way to the harbour is longer.
The airfield is in the east of the island, about 4 kilometres from the town centre. How the ferry runs from Norddeich is covered on the page for the Ferry to Juist.
Hotels and guesthouses
Nearly all the hotels are in town. The Strandhotel Kurhaus and the Juister Hof stand right on the beach promenade. The Hotel Atlantic is at the Kurplatz, the Romantik Hotel Achterdiek and the Nordseehotel Freese are on Wilhelmstraße, and the Bio-Hotel Haus AnNatur is on Dellertstraße. Several have a sauna, and some have their own swimming pool.
Whether dogs are allowed and whether the restaurant opens in winter are best settled directly with the hotel. The Achterdiek takes dogs in separate rooms.
Holiday apartments
Holiday apartments, flats and holiday homes make up a large part of what is on offer. You will find vacant places in the spa administration's directory on juist.de, and short-notice offers on its last-minute exchange. The spa administration's accommodation service also helps by phone.
Arrival and departure times, final cleaning, bed linen and minimum stay are set by each landlord. As the Inselfähre sails with the tides, you will not arrive at the same time every day. Agree your arrival with your landlord.
Youth hostel
The Jugendherberge Juist is in the Loog on Loogster Pad. It takes families, school classes, groups, couples and individual travellers. Check-in is from 15:00 to 21:00. It is open all year, but from November to February only on request, for groups of 30 or more.
With a motorhome
Juist is car-free, and caravans and motorhomes are not allowed on the island. With a motorhome you stay on the mainland in Norddeich, where Nordsee Camp Norddeich lies by the dyke. The town of Norden's central motorhome pitch on Dörper Weg has about 100 spaces, with a maximum stay of 72 hours, no reservations and cashless payment. From there you cross to Juist as a day visitor.
Visitor's tax
You pay a visitor's tax for every night on Juist, and children up to 5 are free. High season runs from 1 April to 31 October and over New Year, and a reduced rate applies the rest of the year. If you travel by Inselfähre or Inselexpress, you pay online before you travel with your ferry ticket, and everyone else pays at the tourist information office at the harbour or at the town hall. With your visitor's tax paid you pay less, or nothing, at the seawater leisure pool.
Getting your luggage from the harbour to your accommodation
You may take one piece of hand luggage and one other item. On the Inselexpress it may weigh up to 25 kilograms, and on the Inselfähre and the Töwerland-Express up to 35.
On the Inselfähre cases go into containers in Norddeich. Remember your container number. On Juist a tractor pulls the containers ashore. On the fast boats you hand your luggage in at the ship.
From the harbour you take your cases to your accommodation by handcart, with the luggage carrier service or by carriage. Some hotels collect luggage at the harbour. A carriage runs to the Loog in time with the ferries. You can also send luggage ahead by parcel service, handing it in four to six days before you travel.
Without a car
Juist is car-free. You park your car in Norddeich, and how that works is covered under Ferry to Juist. Only the ambulance service, fire brigade, doctors and a few service vehicles are on the move on the island. E-scooters are banned, while e-bikes are allowed. You can hire bikes from several rental firms in town and at the airfield.
With a dog
Each place decides for itself whether dogs are allowed in the accommodation, so mention your dog when you enquire. On the beach and in the national park dogs must always be kept on a lead, and from mid-April to mid-October they are only allowed on the two dog beaches rather than the swimming beach. More on this under Holidays on Juist.
When to book
High season runs from 1 April to the end of October. Winter is quiet: some restaurants and shops close for the season, while the supermarkets stay open. In January the seawater leisure pool also closes for a few weeks. The Inselfähre sails with the tides, and times for your travel day are in the timetable.
