What Norddeich is good for
Norddeich is the ferry port for Norderney and Juist and a seaside resort in its own right. Three kinds of guest stay here:
- Before or after the ferry: If you arrive late or want to be on the island early, you sleep a night near the harbour. The station and the Norddeich Mole ferry pier are only a few minutes' walk apart.
- A base for island trips: No driving ban and no luggage logistics, with your own car at the door. Norderney can be reached as a day trip all year.
- A holiday on the mainland: Beach, dyke and Wadden Sea are here too, and accommodation is often cheaper than on the islands.
How the ferries run is covered on the page Ferries from Norddeich.
Which area suits you
- Harbour and Mole: For the night before the ferry. Hotel Fährhaus stands right above the pier.
- Town centre and beach: About a kilometre from the pier, with the beach, the Haus des Gastes and Badestraße. Many holiday apartments and hotels are here.
- Town of Norden: A few kilometres inland, with a market square, shops and hotels in the town centre. Good for longer stays with a car.
Hotels
On the harbour is Hotel Fährhaus, a round building above the port with views of the harbour and sea and an outdoor pool. Hotel Regina Maris on Badestraße is an adults-only hotel with a pool and sauna, about ten minutes' walk from the pier. Hotel Deichkrone is set up for families, with family rooms, a children's programme and its own car park.
In the town of Norden you will find the Tides Boutique Hotel, with a spa and a 24-hour reception. Dogs are allowed in selected rooms there, and there is private parking too.
If your ferry leaves early, ask before you book about breakfast times and whether you can park after checking out.
Holiday apartments
You find holiday apartments and holiday homes through the accommodation search of the Tourismus-Service Norden-Norddeich, and enquiries go directly to the landlord. Conditions vary a great deal. In the holidays some landlords only take weekly stays with arrival on a Saturday or Sunday, while others let by the day. Final cleaning is sometimes included and sometimes costs extra. The offer spells this out.
Youth hostel
The Jugendherberge Norddeich is on Strandstraße near the beach, about a kilometre from the ferry pier and the station. It has 162 beds in 43 rooms and free parking. From November to February it opens on request only, for groups. To book you need membership of the Youth Hostel Association (Jugendherbergswerk).
Camping and motorhomes
Nordsee Camp Norddeich lies behind the sea dyke with its own access to the Wadden Sea. It has pitches for caravans and tents, a shop and a restaurant. It is open from spring to autumn, and the chalets all year. Dogs are partly allowed.
If you have a motorhome, head for the town of Norden's central motorhome pitch on Dörper Weg: about 100 spaces, electricity, fresh water and waste disposal. You stay for a maximum of 72 hours, you cannot reserve, you pay cashless at the machine, and caravans are not allowed.
Visitor's tax
In Norden and Norddeich a visitor's tax is due per overnight stay:
- Mid-March to late October: higher rate per person aged 14 and over
- Rest of the year: lower rate per person aged 14 and over
- Children up to and including 13 pay nothing
Your host collects the tax and gives you your guest card. With it the beach is free, and without the card access costs a day fee. On the motorhome pitch you pay the visitor's tax at the parking machine.
Parking and getting here
If you are crossing to the island and leaving your car on the mainland, you park in the island car parks P1 to P3, with a free shuttle to the pier. If you stay in Norddeich, you park at your accommodation. Ask in advance whether a parking space comes with it. Everything about the harbour car parks is covered under Parking at the ferry port.
By train, the line ends at Norddeich Mole, right by the ferry pier. For the onward journey to your hotel a few minutes' walk or a taxi is usually enough.
With a dog
The fenced dog beach in Norddeich is open from April to September. Dogs may run free there, and there is a dog shower and a drinking point. On the main beach, in the dunes and on the boardwalks dogs are not allowed from March to October, and otherwise a short lead is required. Whether your dog may stay at your accommodation is best settled when you book.
When to book
In the summer holidays harbour hotels and holiday apartments go quickly, especially at weekends when beds change over on the islands. For a single night before the ferry, booking early is especially worthwhile. Winter is quieter, and some places then open only in a limited way. Departures are in the timetable.
